Martin Odegaard sent brutal warning with Eberechi Eze ‘ready’ to become Arsenal’s main man

Martin Odegaard’s future in the Arsenal starting XI appears to be in jeopardy. The Gunners captain watched from the bench for 77 minutes as fellow attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze delivered a player-of-the-match performance in the club’s 4-1 victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.Eze equalled Ted Drake’s record – dating back to 1934/35 – of five goals in a single season against SpursGettyOdegaard’s omission from the starting XI came amid minor concerns over a knee injury, but Eze’s two-goal display had fans asking whether the Norwegian has lost his place as Mikel Arteta‘s first choice No.10.Injury problems aside, many believe Odegaard has suffered a dip in form this season, registering just one goal in 26 appearances.Eze has only started five Premier League games when Odegaard has been available, but talkSPORT’s Inside Gooners panel believe the £67.5million England star is ready to become the main man. When asked about his performance against Spurs, ex-Arsenal defender Adrian Clarke said: “He was outstanding, wasn’t he? “This was a really orthodox 10 role, because we had Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi that were flat too.“He was the guy, central. And I think you’ve got to play quite high to affect the game.“Make sure you get into the box. He obviously got into the box for both the goals. He wins the ball. He started to win the ball better than he did earlier on in the season.“We saw that in the build-up to his second. I just thought once he scored the first, Eze grew three inches taller. He started to have a little bit of swagger about him. It was like his stage.“Some of the little touches and flicks and passes around the corner were a joy to watch. He was absolute class. But he’s set the bar now.“That has to be the level. You can’t just do it twice a season against Spurs. He has to play with that drive, that purpose, that swagger against everyone. And if he does, Odegaard won’t get back in the team.”Is skipper Odegaard now at risk of losing his place in the Gunners starting XI?GettyNow do it against someone betterEze has scored six goals in the Premier League this season, five of which have come in the two north London derbies, following his hat-trick in November. It makes him something of a cult hero among Arsenal fans already, having also rejected a move to Spurs in the summer. However, those two matches have potentially glossed over a mixed season for the former Crystal Palace star, who has twice been hooked at half time by Arteta in recent months.“An element of it is pressure,” Clarke added. “But I think he can handle it. It’s the quality of opposition, isn’t it? Spurs aren’t a very good team.Inside Gooners on talkSPORTNowhere does Arsenal like talkSPORT does.Stay ahead of every tactical shift, manager sacking and transfer rumour by making talkSPORT’s Inside Gooners show your weekly go to for all things Arsenal related.Subscribe now to ensure you never miss a beat of the action one episode at a time, sponsored by BetMGM.Download the app or visit BetMGM.co.uk. 18+gambleaware.org“We want to now see him influence the Man City match in that way, the Chelsea match in that way. That’s the next big challenge. But I think he’s ready to do it.”Ex-Arsenal winger Perry Groves, who spoke at length about the club’s fierce competition in the No.10 position, believes Eze has gradually raised his game since swapping Selhurst Park for the Emirates Stadium.Groves said: “I think Eze realised that he wasn’t at the standards that he wants to be at. And you’re judged at a different level at Arsenal.“He could have a bad half, Crystal Palace, and it doesn’t matter because he knows he’s going to play week in, week out because the fans love him. “You can’t have a bad half for Arsenal. It doesn’t work that way because there’s other players that are on your level that the manager just goes, right, you can come off.“I think he’s further down the line in his tactical awareness than he was obviously scored his hat-trick against Spurs. “So he’s had to dig deep with himself because he knew that he wasn’t at the level.”
