Premier League survival specialist reveals what Igor Tudor must do to keep Tottenham up

Wait 5 sec.

Igor Tudor has got to turn Spurs around if he wants to avoid relegation – and fast.In what was always going to be a tough opening game for the Croat, who replaced the sacked Thomas Frank, his side suffered a 4-1 home defeat to bitter north London rivals Arsenal.Igor Tudor is aiming to get Spurs their first win in 2026 after a brutal 1-4 defeat against ArsenalGettyWith any hopes of an upset squashed by braces from one-time Spurs transfer target Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres, the loss leaves the club in a perilous position.Mirroring the 2024/25 season, strong European form has not been matched domestically, and the club are now languishing in the lower rungs of the Premier League. But unlike last season, they are now in a bona fide dog fight to stay up.The ‘big six’ club sit on 29 points, four above the relegation zone, and two above Nottingham Forest who are in 17th place on 27 points. They are winless in 2026.Frank was given his marching orders in February following a torrid tenure, leaving with a win rate of 26.9 per cent.Former Juventus boss Tudor was then announced as his successor, tasked with changing the sides fortunes, and, crucially, maintaining their top flight status. One man who knows how to beat the drop is Sam Allardyce, who offered some advice when speaking to Alan Brazil on talkSPORT Breakfast.Speaking before the north London derby he said: “Everybody thinks it’s a negative if you focus a lot on stopping the goals going in, and that’s the most important thing when you get to a football club that’s struggling at the moment like Tottenham or Forest.“Because at the other end goals are not as often as you’d like them to be. So stopping the goals going in at the other end is why they are down near the bottom because the goals against are a lot more than the goals for.“And for me as a coach that’s a lot easier to cure.”Sam Allardyce has saved numerous teams from relegation, including Bolton, Crystal Palace and Sunderland during his time as a Premier League managerOutlining why it’s harder to score, he added: “If you need to score goals you need somebody who finishes, you need a finisher. You need somebody like I’ve had, you know, somebody like Jermain Defoe or people like Christian Benteke.“They were leading goal scorers at the clubs, when we [avoided relegation] at Palace and when we [did the same] at Sunderland and that’s very very important.”Although Richarlison is currently Spurs’ top scoring league player with seven goals, he has spent much of the season injured, and behind him are two centre-backs, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, both with four goals.Forwards Mathys Tel, Randal Kolo Muani and Dominic Solanke have all failed to find the scoring form the club desperately needs. In contrast, in the 2015/16 season where Sam Allardyce replaced Dick Advocaat to help rescue Sunderland, Defoe ended the season on 15 league goals.GettyAlthough experienced on the continent, Igor Tudor has never managed in England until taking this position at Spurs[/caption]Benteke also scored 15 goals in the 2016/17 season, when Allardyce was parachuted in to save Crystal Palace, again keeping them in the division.Adding to Allardyce’s argument, Spurs have conceded 41 goals in 27 games in the league with a minus four goal difference.Highlighting their stark inability to keep the ball out of their own net, Spurs have scored only one goal less than Aston Villa, who sit in third place having scored 38 goals.Tudor, though, is not a novice when it comes to stopping the rot, saving Udinese from relegation to Serie B in the 2017/18 season. But despite his long career, managing Juventus, Galatasaray and Marseille, this is his first time managing in the Premier League. And upcoming fixtures don’t make his job any easier. Spurs are away at Fulham on the 2nd March, who are in pursuit of European football. They then play Crystal Palace at home and Liverpool at Anfield. All that before a must-win fixture against Nottingham Forest on Sunday 22nd March.
