Maltese activists Sasha Vella and Belle de Jong have taken to Instagram with an urgent call to action, urging the public to sign a petition pushing the European Union to adopt the My Voice, My Choice proposal. The initiative calls on the European Commission to fund abortion services for women forced to travel abroad from countries where the procedure remains criminalised, including Malta. In the video, de Jong speaks candidly about the reality of living under Malta’s strict abortion laws. “I needed an abortion in Malta where I could face up to three years in prison for it,” she says. And Vella “ thank[s] God every single day that [she] never needed an abortion, because in my country that makes [her] a criminal.”De Jong stressed that she was fortunate enough to have had the means to travel abroad, an option not available to everyone. According to the activists, more than one million Europeans have signed My Voice, My Choice, backing efforts to ensure access to abortion care across borders.
