Jetpack Cat’s reign of terror could be on its way out as Blizzard plots to nerf her: ‘Honestly, what were they thinking?’

Wait 5 sec.

Jetpack Cat, one of Overwatch's newest heroes and certainly one of its most annoying, has finally been nerfed. Ever since her introduction with the Reign of Talon update, the Jetpack Cat has dominated almost every match she's featured in, and certainly those games that I myself have played. It's a welcome change, though slight, and likely to be followed up with extra nerfs down the line. Jetpack Cat's nerf came via tweaks to her most popular perks, Claws Out and Territorial. The former makes her quick melee attack become more powerful every eight seconds, whereas before it'd have a six-second timer. The melee can deal incredible damage to squishies, allowing the Cat to use her perpetual flight to circle around to the backline and chunk sharpshooters or outright kill them with relative ease. Jetpack Cat was one of the heroes added with Reign of Talon. The perk alters Purr to also deal damage to enemies within its AOE, which has now been toned down from 50 to 33 percent of the heal amount. With these perks, Jetpack Cat was an absolute menace. While perpetually flying (basically the only hero in the game who has this ability), the Cat could waltz around, heal, and do massive damage while remaining safe from harm. She would be impossible to catch as her whole kit is well-suited to an "in-and-out" playstyle, which, in combination with her powerful ultimate, could result in the Cat singlehandedly crowd-controlling the entire enemy team (while sustaining her own). These nerfs certainly help to mitigate some of her offensive prowess, while the other aspects of her powerful abilities are still there. Though the percentages and cooldowns were altered a little, the Cat now only needs a better frontline or other wingman to support her on her quest for dominance, mainly due to her ability to fly up and seldom come down. She will suffer from a bit more downtime (the two extra seconds on her perk will add up), but still be able to chunk sharpshooters or other backline heroes with relative ease. Even so, this is a great step toward more balance, which Overwatch does relatively well overall. And no, I'm not writing all of this because I'm a salty Widowmaker main. She is utterly overpowered. Image via Blizzard EntertainmentPlayers on social platforms like Reddit praised the nerfs, though some believed the Jetpack Cat wasn't so powerful to begin with. She does enjoy a lot of popularity among the player base, so we can safely assume that many of those responding to the nerfs are Cat players themselves. Still, one user couldn't wrap their head around Blizzard's plans for the Cat ahead of her release, given that any level of playtesting would have shown her overpowered abilities. "Honestly, what were they thinking?" they asked, remarking that no hero in Overwatch should have perpetual flight (nor do Pharah, Mercy, or others have it, even if it can be prolonged via skillful movement management). The Jetpack Cat is also one of the most banned heroes in the entire game, and she is tied with Mizuki as the most picked hero of the current season. It's literally a pick or ban situation, which is a good indication of how powerful the Cat is perceived to be (or was, prior to the nerfs). At any rate, I'm happy she's getting rebalanced, but I still think there's a long way to go before she can be considered a balanced character.
