Premier League clubs have been issued a stark warning ahead of potential plans to launch a global digital broadcasting channel.Chief executive Richard Masters this week revealed plans for a 24-hour a day service in Singapore.Premier League chief Richard Masters has announced the launch of a 24/7 channel to be broadcast in SingaporeGetty Images - GettyThe news has reignited plans for a similar system in the UK which could eventually culminate in the end of the 3pm blackout.Fan frustrationIt comes amid frustration over the rising cost of televised football with fans having to pay for multiple subscriptions to stay across the action.With broadcast rights packages continuing to soar, subscriptions have also risen.Premier League fans splash out for Sky Sports and TNT Sports to get their fix while fans of teams competing in the Champions league will need an Amazon Prime subscription to have complete coverage.With the current broadcast deal ending in 2029, football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes the move to broadcast as a 24/7 channel in Singapore is a testing ground for a future shift in strategy.“I think it’s the Premier League dipping their toe in the water as far as its ability to take total control,” he told talkSPORT.“At present, I think they’re fully aware that they are having to go via a wholesaler through their broadcast partners.“The Premier League would potentially have under this system the ability to deliver Premier League-only content 24/7 and also to appeal directly to fans and to come up with a pricing mechanism which could be more palatable for fans.“That could have a positive impact if it reduces the amount of piracy.”Maguire continued: “What we’ve seen with the attempts of a domestic coup of the game in project big picture and the Super League which was a European coup, under both of those schemes the clubs would have been able to sell their own rights directly to fans.Fans have been left angered by the rising cost of football subscriptionsGetty“You’d have a Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Liverpool channel.“These clubs with huge fanbases would very much like that.”No room for errorMaguire has warned clubs that while a switch to a streaming service may put the power in their hands, there will be an even greater need for solid financial management without the guarantee of set broadcasting income made known in advance.“The downside for the Premier League is if you’ve seen what’s happened in France, the French TV deal collapsed and the French Football Association took over (the launch of an in-house streaming service) and that’s resulted in the total monies coming through to clubs halving,” he added.“I think the Premier League is trying to jump in between that opportunity to say look if we do it on a Premier League basis as whole, that means we will still have a fairly decent distribution of money within the Premier League and that means that we’ve still got the competitive balance that is so important to the balance.“The good thing about the relationships with the Premier League and the likes of Sky and Discovery + is that they’ve got a degree of certainty.Kieran Maguire explained the financial drawbacks of a streaming serviceGetty“If you’re trying to sign a player for 50 or 60 million pounds and you’re paying them £220,000 a week on a five-year contract, if you know exactly how much money you’re getting from the TV deal for the next five years, that’s going to help you budget.“So there’s pros and cons on both sides.”
