Americans can use the TrumpRx platform to search for discounted prices on prescription drugs.President Trump spoke about the program at Tuesday’s State of the Union address, saying, “Americans, who have for decades paid by far the highest prices of any nation anywhere in the world for prescription drugs, will now pay the lowest price anywhere in the world for drugs, anywhere, the lowest price.”But scoring these lower-priced drugs may not be so simple for some people. Here’s what to know about TrumpRx, plus more ways to save on your prescriptions.TrumpRx is a government-hosted website where you can find discounts on primarily name-brand medications, including weight-loss drugs, fertility medications, inhalers, and more. These discounts apply for prescribed users paying for the drugs with cash (not insurance).At launch, TrumpRx offered discounts on drugs from five pharmaceutical companies (AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, EMD Serono, Novo Nordisk, and Pfizer), with the promise of more drugs from additional companies “in the coming months.” As of publishing, 43 drugs are currently listed on TrumpRx.gov.You cannot buy prescription drugs directly through TrumpRx. To get your drugs at the price on the website, you’ll need to either take the coupon from TrumpRx to a participating pharmacy or locate the discounted price through the manufacturer’s website.For example, for the TrumpRx discount on the Wegovy Pen semaglutide, you can print the coupon or add it to your mobile wallet and present it to a participating pharmacy. For Xigduo Xr, a combination medication used to treat Type 2 Diabetes, you can access the discount by following a link from the site to AstraZeneca Direct, the manufacturer’s portal for direct orders.For the available drugs, TrumpRx offers an easy way to search for discounted prices. Still, according to a recent research analysis by KFF, a nonpartisan health policy research, polling, and news organization, many of the discounts available through TrumpRx are also available for self-paying customers on the manufacturers’ websites.TrumpRx is for people who pay for prescriptions using cash. If you have insurance and pay for medications through your insurance, you won’t be eligible to receive the discounted prices on TrumpRx.You can forgo your insurance and choose to pay cash for eligible drugs using the discount. But your price with insurance may already be cheaper. In fact, the TrumpRx website directs users with insurance to check their co-pays before paying cash for available drugs.“Almost all of the drugs that are on TrumpRx are typically covered by insurance for people who have insurance coverage,” said Michelle Long, senior policy manager for the Program on Patient and Consumer Protections at KFF. “Their co-pay could be less expensive, or if they have a co-insurance, that could also be less expensive than using a TrumpRx coupon.”If you use Medicare, Medicaid, or other government-funded medical benefits, you won’t be eligible for TrumpRx savings. The TrumpRx website specifies these programs, along with Medigap, VA, DOD, TRICARE, and other state and federal benefits and assistance programs, as ineligible.You’ll also still need a valid prescription to use the drugs listed on TrumpRx; you cannot be prescribed medication through the site. Your doctor will send your prescription to a pharmacy, and you can pick it up and pay for it using the coupon when eligible.Read more: Medicare open enrollment — How to add or adjust your coverageGenerally speaking, TrumpRX is most useful for Americans without insurance who take name-brand prescription drugs.Maybe you lost your job and are temporarily uninsured but still need to take your prescribed medication, or you need a specific medication and have a prescription but can’t afford the cost of insurance coverage.Another case when TrumpRx may be useful is for people whose insurance doesn’t cover the available name-brand drugs.Long points specifically to the GLP-1s and fertility drugs available from TrumpRx. “We know that a lot of people, even [those] who have insurance, don’t have coverage for those drugs, so they might actually find some savings,” she said.According to Trump’s State of the Union address, taking on drug prices has resulted in “price differences of 300, 400, 500, 600%, and more.” However, prices listed on the TrumpRx site range from 33% to 93% discounts for available drugs. And data shows that we do pay more for those drugs than people in other countries.If you use a name-brand medication, it’s worth checking the eligible drugs on TrumpRx to see if yours is listed, and how the price compares to what you already pay.Some of the drugs on TrumpRx have generic alternatives, which may be cheaper than the name-brand option, even with a discount. Despite the disclaimer on TrumpRx to check your insurance co-pay, the site is missing “a similar disclaimer to let people know that, in many cases, there is a generic available, and it would be less expensive to you,” Long said.Some drugs may also have comparable or even better discounts available elsewhere.Websites like GoodRx, SingleCare, Cost Plus Drugs (by Mark Cuban), and America’s Pharmacy similarly offer coupons and discounts on prescription drugs. But they offer additional generic options too — not just name brands. In addition to some of the same drugs as TrumpRx (or generic alternatives), these sites also have a much larger range of available medications.“Shop around,” Long said about saving on prescriptions. She compares it to practices you may already use to save money on healthcare, like comparing different insurance plans annually to find the best deal. “Drugs, in this way, are similar. Check what all of your options might be, both for paying cash and for using your health insurance.”
